Beyond the Donation Box: When Giving Becomes an Experience
An office is generally marked by meetings, deadlines, and the quiet hum of productivity. The sound of keyboards tapping away, the buzzing of notifications, and discussions taking place across computer screens often mark a familiar workday.
However, on 25th August, the atmosphere at the Appinventiv office in Noida was a little different. It was filled with laughter. There were games being played and conversations taking place that were not related to deadlines. And there was the unmistakable energy of students exploring a space they had never been to before.
Seven students from Pehchaan The Street School visited the office space as a part of the Appinventiv Foundation’s Social Work Day initiative. What began as a corporate social responsibility initiative soon became something much more personal. It provided the students with an opportunity to step into a professional environment, interact with new people and experience a world different from their usual surroundings.
Sometimes, it is easier to learn when you take the class beyond a classroom. To the students of Pehchaan The Street School, the Appinventiv office was not just another workplace. It was a new environment to explore, with an entirely different set of activities and experiences. Games acted as icebreakers, discussions helped the students feel more comfortable, and sharing of refreshments and lunch created opportunities for connection.
For a while, the rhythm of the office changed a little.
The usual sounds of keyboards and meetings had found some company in laughter, conversations and discussions. It didn’t feel like a disruption, but rather an opportunity for connection. And perhaps this is exactly where meaningful engagement between organisations and communities begins.
Often, corporate social responsibility is understood through what an organisation contributes – funding, resources or donations. Yet, its impact can extend beyond what is given, in the doors it opens and the new experiences and possibilities it makes accessible to students.
That is exactly what made the donation box at Appinventiv so special.
Placed as part of the initiative, it collected contributions that were eventually received by the students. But this was not all that happened as part of this process. The students were not only receiving what had been gathered for them; they were also welcomed into the space where the initiative had taken place. Such is the link between community service and community engagement.
Education at Pehchaan The Street School has never been about what happens inside the confines of a learning centre. Since 2015, Pehchaan The Street School has worked to bring education closer and create avenues for developing a sense of confidence, curiosity, life skills and possibilities. And one such avenue has always been the interaction with different people and surroundings.
It is through such experiences that collaborations between organisations and workplaces can act as a bridge.
One side contributes resources, time, and opportunity, while the other provides interest, curiosity, and fresh perspectives. And when those two come together, the exchange works both ways.
The students take away from the experience more than the material contributions alone. They have gained some experience of being in an office while also having the chance to eat lunch together, play, and spend time in a new environment beyond their usual learning space.
And perhaps the office gains something too.
For a day, the pace was different. The computers were still in use, the work still needed to be done, and the meetings will continue once more. Yet, the office was reminded that workplaces can also be places where communities meet.
Perhaps the most meaningful work does not happen around a conference table.
Sometimes, it begins when someone opens a door.
