Teacher’s Day at Pehchaan The Street School

Teachers are an indispensable component of a child’s life; their role is not just restricted to the realm of classroom education and imparting of educative knowledge. A teacher has a far-reaching purpose and function in a child’s life.

They are figures of nurturance and love, and essential role models serving to guide their students to become the best version of themselves.

The essential function of a teacher can be likened to a potter who moulds each of their creations into delicate forms through guidance, gentle care, and dedication. In this manner, teachers are an essential part of a community, and of society at large; they must not be confined to the context of textbook knowledge but be celebrated in their own right. The guidance and mentorship provided by a teacher are unconditional, receptive to errors, and filled with an inherent desire to make the best of each student.

Every year on 5th September 2024, the celebration of these values is exemplified by commemorating ‘Teacher’s Day’ in India. This day marks the birth anniversary of Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. Dr Radhakrishnan was a scholar, teacher, and the second president of India, with vast contributions to academia and several recognitions. The celebration of Teacher’s Day can be traced back to 1962 when Dr. Radhakrishnan’s students wanted to celebrate his birthday. He chose to commemorate the day in honour of teachers instead-teachers who have a vital role in the trajectory of a child’s life, and in nourishing their hearts and minds.

Every year, we celebrate teachers with unique tokens of love, appreciation, and expressions that may be able to convey even a fraction of gratitude in the reservoir of our hearts.

It is important to celebrate the role of those who have willingly undertaken the enterprise of dispensing knowledge, and the noble task of education.

Pehchaan The Street School, this year, witnessed a similar show of gratitude towards its dedicated team of teaching volunteers. The organization is an amalgamation of nearly a decade-long effort towards making education accessible. Notably, the organization is volunteer-driven, and sustained by a community of passionate individuals.

Amongst these are trained teaching volunteers-individuals who choose to pursue the avenue of engaging with the community and actively realizing the goal of quality education

With the intent of recognizing and celebrating their beautiful efforts, teacher’s Day was celebrated at Pehchaan The Street School. Students engaged in activities such as making cards to express their deep love and gratitude for their mentors. Moreover, Pehchaan The Street School through its social media posts commemorated the importance of teachers and their irreplaceable roles in our lives and our hearts.

Geetanjali Salon Academy partnered with Pehchaan The Street School on the occasion of Teacher’s Day to express its affirmation of the importance of education and of those who facilitate the process of education in our lives.

An engaging practical workshop on makeup and hairstyling was carried out, with a positive message of uplifting potential, and empowering oneself to foster a unique sense of self.

The day was an enlightening realization of how teachers shape the process of learning with their empathy, creativity, patience, and unconditional love.

Mentors who impact lives provide a valuable message-that of, acceptance. Acceptance of all parts of oneself, and of the errors one might make in the process. Identity is not a unidimensional product of static knowledge; it is facilitated by caregivers and forces in society. The largest part of one’s child is spent in the four walls of the classroom, wherein lessons are learned and unlearnt, and a true sense of self emerges.

“Everyone who remembers his own education remembers teachers, not methods and techniques. The teacher is the heart of the educational system.” –Sidney Hook. Teachers epitomize the process of creation; beyond all the knowledge that humanity may ever carry in its books is the necessity of someone who imparts it. It is this process of imparting knowledge that shapes creativity, self-expression, confidence, discovery, and inquisitiveness in the receivers of this knowledge. Recognition and celebration of this fact of life is the first step in building a society filled with curiosity and passion for life.
